Modelling Spatial Constraints on Brain Connectivity

ثبت نشده
چکیده

In the mammalian brain, there is a large volume of white matter dedicated to long-range wiring, separated from the neuron cell bodies and short-range wiring. In the avian brain, no such dedicated volume exists. Assuming that evolution has maximised brain functionality, what are the advantages of the mammalian arrangement from an engineering point of view? To find possible answers to the question, this project considers the implications of changing the spatial arrangements of networks on a two-dimensional computer model. As a basis for the research, we test results from previous analytical studies. We find that, when a network has high local connectivity and sparse global connectivity, the mammalian arrangement can potentially reduce the total length of wiring. We then draw on percolation theory to consider the possibility that separating long-range fibers enables neuron cell bodies to be more densely packed.

Influence of Wiring Cost on the Large-Scale Architecture of Human Cortical Connectivity

In the past two decades some fundamental properties of cortical connectivity have been discovered: small-world structure, pronounced hierarchical and modular organisation, and strong core and rich-club structures. A common assumption when interpreting results of this kind is that the observed structural properties are present to enable the brain's function. However, the brain is also embedded i...

The relationship between spatial configuration and functional connectivity of brain regions

Brain connectivity is often considered in terms of the communication between functionally distinct brain regions. Many studies have investigated the extent to which patterns of coupling strength between multiple neural populations relates to behaviour. For example, studies have used 'functional connectivity fingerprints' to characterise individuals' brain activity. Here, we investigate the exte...

Brain Connectivity Reflected in Electroencephalogram Coherence in Individuals With ‎Autism: A Meta-analysis

Introduction: Many theories have been proposed about the etiology of autism. One is related to brain connectivity in patients with autism. Several studies have reported brain connectivity changes in autism disease. This study was performed on Electroencephalogram (EEG) studies that evaluated patients with autism, using functional brain connectivity, and compared them with typically-developing i...

Causal Modelling and Brain Connectivity in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Neuroimaging studies that investigate the involvement of brain regions in various cognitive and perceptual tasks have become increasingly prevalent. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies are especially popular, due to their non-invasive nature and high spatial resolution. With recent advances in data analysis and modelling, it is now possible to use fMRI data to ask not only whic...

Assessment of Anesthesia Depth Using Effective Brain Connectivity Based on Transfer Entropy on EEG Signal

Introduction: Ensuring an adequate Depth of Anesthesia (DOA) during surgery is essential for anesthesiologists. Since the effect of anesthetic drugs is on the central nervous system, brain signals such as Electroencephalogram (EEG) can be used for DOA estimation. Anesthesia can interfere among brain regions, so the relationship among different areas can be a key factor in the anesthetic process...
